The Freedom Caucus: Why Bother Making Demand List for Kevin McCarthy?

Making the loud and angry point against Kevin McCarthy for Speaker. Congressman Jim Jordan founded the Freedom Caucus earlier this year, with leadership elections coming at some point in the future. Congressman Kevin McCarthy, hoping to replace Speaker John Boehner, made a call on the

Caucus. The vote for Speaker of the House is October 8th, just five days from now. The Caucus is looking for a candidate to support as a block (80% support of Caucus needed) and may God with them, and may Kevin McCarthy and current leadership fade into the background. Let us remember just a bit about Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who replaced his boss, Eric Cantor (R-VA) as Majority Leader, when voters booted Cantor in favor of little known Conservative, Dave Brat (R-VA). The point can’t be better made than this:

Several groups placed McCarthy’s voting record well to the left of Cantor’s for 2013. The American Conservative Union rated McCarthy at 72 percent compared with 84 percent for Cantor; Heritage Action ratings place Cantor at 53 percent and McCarthy at 42 percent; and Club for Growth had Cantor at 68 percent and McCarthy at 53 percent. Moving away from conservative groups, the National Journal rated Cantor the 80th most conservative member of the House while McCarthy was 170th.

McCarthy voted for a Hurricane Sandy relief bill that included spending that was unrelated to providing emergency aid, fought for the farm and food stamp bill, fought reforms to the federal sugar program, and backed an extension of the corporate welfare agency known as the Export-Import Bank.

In January, he also supported a path to legal status for immigrants who entered this country illegally.Source: Washington Examiner

I tried to find a political cartoon that belonged here, but there’s nothing funny about what we’re about to let happen.

The group of several dozen conservatives will vote as a block if 80 percent of them agree to support the same candidate. Several HFC insiders do not believe any candidate will reach that threshold, but sources inside the group are also sending signals that they might back McCarthy in his run for speaker.

But the group’s conservative members are eager to find their own candidate … Source: Politico

The Freedom Caucus needs to get this done. Rep. Jim Jordan should reconsider running, and as true patriots did with General George Washington, some arm twisting in the name of Freedom and Liberty should commence.

The Freedom Caucus’ stated mission makes it difficult for to understand why they are bothering with a list of “demands” for McCarthy. Really, why bother if your mission is to: “… focus on what we believe middle-class voters send us here to do.” If it isn’t stone-cold obvious that we don’t want, and should not have, anyone in current leadership as Speaker, than maybe I can believe the world is flat.

The group has nine founding members, including Jordan and Representatives Raúl Labrador (R., Idaho), Justin Amash (R., Mich.), Ron DeSantis (R., Fla.), John Fleming (R., La.), Scott Garrett (R., N.J.), Mark Meadows (R., N.C.), Mick Mulvaney (R., S.C.), and Matt Salmon (R., Ariz.).

The founding members will decide who receives an invitation to join the group; to finance the hiring of staff, they’ll also pay “mortgages,” a higher level of funding for the organization than the rest of the dues-paying members will be required to provide. They hope to cap the group at around 40 lawmakers, and expect to debut with more than 30 — a crucial number, because it takes 29 dissents to block the House Republican majority from passing a bill. 2 Pingbacks/Trackbacks

  • Fixall

More and more, it seems like the Republicans have forgotten why they were sent to Washington.

    • Fixall, I think today, they ONLY remember how they are set for life if they can on the the Hill.

      • Fixall

Yes, set for life while they ignore what Americans want.(Time for term limits)

  • cryandhowl

They know that once they’re in they will almost never have to leave.

    • cryandhowl, just had a man on FB who seems to know a lot about McCarthy, comment saying McCarthy was on national TV for eight days before Boehner announced. McCarthy made his Benghazi comment after this article. Can’t believe the stupid mindset behind that comment.
