These reports are early so bear that in mind. A man dressed in black body armor and wearing a helmet is said to have opened fire inside the Westfield Garden State Plaza Mall near Nordstrom’s on the second floor, sometime just before closing at 9:30 p.m. EST. It is believed there were no injuries. Three to five shots are reported at this time. A manhunt is under way. The Mall is located about 12-20 miles from Manhattan in Bergen County. UPDATE 11-5-13 @ 7:33 a.m. EST: There are reports this morning that the alleged shooter was found dead (3:20 a.m.) in a non-public area of the mall. Police say he took his life with the a weapon that matched the shell casing found earlier. The man found is 20-year-old Richard Shoop of Teaneck, New Jersey.
Molinelli said Shoop killed himself with the same weapon he used at the mall and that a note was found. Ehrenberg said the area where Shoop was found was not open to the public.
Molinelli said that Shoop had a history of drug abuse, though it was not clear if he had a criminal record. The prosecutor said that Shoop used “hard drugs, everything … I think MDMA was his drug of choice.”
Shoop, a resident of Teaneck, N.J. who worked at a local pizzeria, had been identified as the shooting suspect late Monday by theStar-Ledger of Newark, who cited two senior law enforcement officials. Source: Fox News
At the scene, Paramus Mayor Rich LaBarbiera confirmed one shot from a long-armed rifle, although witnesses reported hearing more shots. He said everyone was safe and there were no reports of injuries as of the 11 p.m. hour.
“We found one shell casing, which I believe was from a long-armed rifle,” Paramus Office of Emergency Management deputy coordinator Jim Tedesco said on 1010 WINS.
“There has been no injuries, there has been no victims, and we are now searching the mall and sweeping it,” LaBarbiera added at a news conference.
Late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, agencies from all over New Jersey were going through the mall and sweeping the area. The mall was placed on lockdown, and crews were passing through in an attempt to evacuate the mall in a safe and orderly way.
Despite some people who reported more than one gunman, LaBarbiera said there was just one. He said the shooter was believed to have left the mall.
I see a Twitter thread by PzFeed Top News saying police are heading to the shooter’s house, but I see nothing anywhere indicating the gunman’s identity is known.
UPDATE: FBI AND SWAT ARE NOW HEADING TO THE SHOOTERS HOUSE.
