On a day when Nancy Pelosi chooses to tell us that five times as many people have signed up for ObamaCare (500,000) as the White House admitted to today (106185 – including those who dropped a plan into a virtual shopping cart but didn’t check out – didn’t buy – didn’t enroll), we learn that an historic Black university, Bowie State in Maryland, has “suspended” offering health insurance for “domestic” students for 2013-2014. I assume non-domestic students are not eligible for Bowie health plans, but that assumption might be wrong in this upside world. Bowie awarded Michelle Obama (no longer an attorney, and not a member of any bar) an Honorary Doctors of Law degree.
“Due to new requirements of the Affordable Care Act which will go into effect on January 1, 2014, the cost of insurance for domestic students will increase to approximately $1800 per year.”
That works out to approximately $900 per semester. The student health insurance plan had cost students $50 per semester for the 2012-13 school year, according to a cached page of the university’s description of the plan. The original link to the description has been deleted.
According to an article in The Bulldog Collegian, Bowie State’s official student newspaper, the Director of the Bowie State University Wellness Center said that the university decided it would not be worth it to provide student health insurance at all given how expensive it would be to do so under the new regulations. In August 2013, the White House was touting Obama’s record of support of “historically black colleges and universities” and the awesome “funding” of those institutions under this redistributive President, who doesn’t have a penny to spend unless it comes from your pocket and mine.
The Bowie State’s Wellness Center doesn’t want to talk about it. Read more about Michelle’s “degree” at NY Daily News.
