Obama is in St. Petersburg, Russia today for the G20 Summit. Years from now we may be told our President entered Vladimir Putin’s den with a dose of Valium to get him through it. Yesterday, Putin hinted that Russia may provide a missile shield for Syria if the U.S. strikes the country and he called John Kerry a liar.
Putin, in an interview published on Wednesday, said it was too early to talk about what Russia would do if the US attacked Syria but added: “We have our ideas about what we will do and how we will do it in case the situation develops toward the use of force or otherwise. We have our plans.”
He then said Russia might restart Syria’s suspended S-300 air defence missile contract. Describing the weapon as “very efficient”, he said: “If we see that steps are taken that violate the existing international norms, we shall think how we should act in the future, in particular regarding supplies of such sensitive weapons to certain regions of the world.”
The statement could also be a veiled threat to revive a contract for the delivery of the S-300s to Iran, which Russia cancelled a few years ago under strong US and Israeli pressure. Source: The Guardian
US Secretary of State John Kerry a liar:
The apparent question is al Qaeda influence on the Syrian rebels, an issue Kerry has downplayed.
Speaking to his human rights council on Wednesday, Putin said: “This was very unpleasant and surprising for me. We talk to them (the Americans) and we assume they are decent people, but he is lying and he knows that he is lying. This is sad.” Source: USA Today
Then Putin added that he might support a UN Security Council Resolution supporting military action in Syria if the U.N. can convince him Assad gassed his own people. As many have asked, why would Assad, who was winning his civil war, use weapons assured to bring world outrage against him?
