Chris Kyle Deadliest Sniper Murdered at Rough Creek Lodge: Suspect in Custody? UPDATED

This story is just breaking so information may be inaccurate but reports are that former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (39) was murdered along with a “neighbor” at Rough Creek Lodge about 50 miles southwest Fort Worth, Texas. Chris was known as the military’s “deadliest sniper,” with 160 confirmed kills. You may remember that Kyle claimed to deck Jesse Ventura in a bar where Kyle was attending a funeral wake on Coronado Island for Medal of Honor recipient Michael Monsoor. Ventura said it didn’t happen. Two men came allegedly came forward to vouch for Kyle. He was the author of “American Sniper.” I find little online other than message boards. Geraldo Rivera (don’t groan, please, he’s all I have) reported minutes ago that Kyle was shot at point-blank range by a former soldier who Kyle was trying to help through PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome). The Blaze is reporting two people dead, and Dallas media saying a man has been arrested. WFAA out of Dallas confirms the alleged killer was recovering from PSTD and is believed to be “highly trained with military experience” and is in custody. The same reports says Kyle was “president of Craft International, a company that provides training to military and law enforcement professionals.” As I said, there’s little info, so expect corrections. I’ll have updates as they become available. (If you have not read American Sniper by Chris Kyle, you really should. It’s an easy read, spoken in the voice of a true Texan. His wife is quoted giving details of how they met, and the training he went through to become a Navy SEAL with two steel pins in each wrist is fascinating. Kyle was a man of deep convictions).

UPDATE 2-4-13 @ 6:18 pm CST: Shep Smith on Fox is just reporting that police documents show Routh saying he “sold his soul for a new truc.”  The three men went to the shooting range in either Kyle’s or Littlefield’s truck. After the murders, Routh drove the truck to his sister’s house and then to his own home. The report also said Routh thought he could get away by driving to Oklahoma.

Police records from Lancaster show Routh was taken to mental hospital on Sept. 2 after threatening to kill his family and then commit suicide. Authorities found Routh walking nearby with no shirt and no shoes, and smelling of alcohol. Routh told authorities he was a Marine veteran who was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

“Eddie stated he was hurting and that his family does not understand what he has been through,” the report said.

Routh’s mother told police that her son had been drinking and became upset when his father said he was going to sell his gun. She said Routh began arguing with them and said he was going to “blow his brains out.”

Police took Routh to Green Oaks Hospital for psychiatric care.

Dallas police records show Routh was taken back to the same mental hospital Jan. 19 after a woman called police and said she feared for Routh’s safety.

Routh reportedly dropped by his sister’s house after he murdered Kyle and Littlefield and told her and her husband what he ahd done. They called authorities. Earlier reports said Kyle and Littlefield were shot once each in the back. This report says they were shot multiple time with a semiautomatic shotgun. The weapon used in the shootings was found at Routh’s Lancaster home:

Routh has officially been charged with two counts of capital murder and his being held on a $3 million bond. On Sunday, the Tribune reported that his stay in jail hasn’t been peaceful: he was tasered Sunday evening after becoming aggressive.

The local Glen Rose Reporter says he’s now being restrained to a chair in his cell. It also notes that he’s been getting death threats.

UPDATE 2-3-13 @ 11:30 pm CST: The New York Times says Erath County Sheriff and investigators are trying to determine Kyle’s relationship with Eddie Routh. This trip to the shooting resort was the first time he had been with Routh at a shooting range, and Kyle, his friend Chad Littlefield (who also died) and Routh drove to the range together.

“The suspect’s mother was a schoolteacher for a long time,” the sheriff said. “She may have reached out to Mr. Kyle to try and help her son. We kind of have an idea that maybe that’s why they were at the range, for some type of therapy that Mr. Kyle assists people with.”

UPDATE 2-3-13 @ 10:45 am CST: On Fox News now, Eye witness who lived across the street from where Routh was captured said authorities had Routh on the ground with 4 “shotguns” aimed at him.

UPDATE 2-3-13 @ 10:45 am CST: Chris Kyle spoke out about Obama’s gun grab. Watch the video at Pat Dollard.

UPDATE 2-3-13 @ 10:20 am CST: MyFoxDFW is saying Kyle was known for “his dedication to helping disabled veterans,” and that Kyle had a foundation, FITCO Cares: (FITCO was so-founded by Chris Kyle and Jason Kos)

The FITCO Cares foundation will always carry the torch to help our brave men and women who have survived combat but are still fighting to survive post traumatic stress disorder. Chris Kyle helped establish this foundation and we are committed to make sure his memory lives on forever.

If you would like to share your condolences, please do so in the message box below. Additionally, if you want to help FITCO Cares help veterans fight PTSD, please let us know how we can reach you in the message area below or donate to securely right now.

Thank you for your concern and sentiment. Please pray for all those who loved Chris. He will be forever missed.

UPDATE 2-3-13 @ 10:014 am CST: WFAA/Channel 8: witnesses report Kyle and Littlefield were both shot in the back:

WFAA/Channel 8 quoted unnamed sources as saying that Kyle of Midlothian and a neighbor had taken Routh on an outing to help him deal with post-traumatic stress disorder. Routh turned on the men and shot them in the back, the report added.

The sheriff said he could not confirm how the victims were shot.

In January 2012, the Cleburne Times-Review reported that Routh of Lancaster was arrested in Johnson county on a DWI charge. Public records showed Routh previously lived in Camp LeJeune, N.C., site of a major Marine base.

UPDATE 2-3-13 @ 10:09 am CST: Fox News is reporting this morning that Kyle’s friend who was also murdered allegedly by Eddit Routh is Chad Littlefied (35). Routh was apprehended about 5 hours after the murders in Erath County, apparently at his home. He ran from the shooting scene in Kyle or Littlefield’s truck.

UPDATE 2-2-13 @ 11 pm CSTSooperMexican is reporting Eddie Routh has been identified as the murderer. KHOU says Routh is 25 years old. He was captured in Lanacaster, south of Dallas. KHOU says the second man murdered, as yet unnamed, was a neighbor of Routh, and all three lived in Midlothian, Texas.
