In the news this morning I find that the applause for Candy Crowley’s claim that Mitt Romney was incorrect about Obama’s Libya statement, came only from one person within the actual audience, and that person was Michelle Obama…but the photo below tells a different story…unless the press was actually in the audience. In the first video you will see her in pink as she comes out of the “clap.” I’ve read that the press applauded and cheered but were in a room close by, so don’t know the real story. Crowley announced in the beginning that the audience would NOT applaud, or make any noise during the debate, in compliance with Debate Commission rules. But MO isn’t just any audience member, is she? No, she’s the The Won’s “sweetie.” Whomever applauded, the First Lady should not have been among them.
Nearly all of the audible applause came from those sitting away from the actual debate, but when FOX News’ camera shot moved to a bird’s-eye view it became apparent that the only applause from the participating debate audience came from first lady Michelle Obama. Mitt Romney’s wife Ann was also sitting with the debate participants.
According to the rules both campaigns agreed to, or the memorandum of understanding (MOA), there is to be no clapping from members of the debate audience.
The rule: Article 9, Section A, Subsection 7: “All members of the debate audience will be instructed by the moderator before the debate goes on the air and by the moderator after the debate goes on the air not to applaud, speak, or otherwise participate in the debate by any means other than by silent observation, except as provided by the agreed upon rules of the October 16 town hall debate.” Source: Fox News
When Obama completely ignored the specific question: Do you agree with your own Secretary of Energy’s (Chu) statement that your administration is not concerned with rising energy costs?” [paraphrased but close] – completely ignored it. Didn’t address the question at all, in any way, Crowley was silent. After Obama interrupted Romney’s truthful statements about Obama’s record, then refused to answer Romney’s question: how many permits? which was pertinent to the discussion, Crowley ignored it.
The one question on Libya was crucial. Obama tried to dismiss a very polite but direct question from Romney about whether Obama deemed Libya a terrorist attack the day after it happened. In the second video below, see exactly what was said, and hear Obama dodge and say “proceed Governor” as if Romney was a “kingdom subject” rather than a challenger. If you haven’t read the details of the whole Candy Crowley admonishment of Romney, read the details here.
