UK Stops Russian Ship Carrying Attack Helicopters for Syria

Apparently, a ship cannot be on the high seas without insurance, and British insurer, Standard Club, pulled coverage for a Russian ship reportedly carrying attack helicopters to assist Syria’s official government as they try to quash a civilian revolt:

Mi25 or Mi24

“We were made aware of the allegations that the Alaed was carrying munitions destined for Syria,” the company said in a statement. “We have already informed the ship owner that their insurance cover ceased automatically in view of the nature of the voyage.” Source.

The British government warned Standard Club that providing insurance was a breach of EU sanctions which have banned sending arms to aid Syria’s Bashar al-Assad government.

The ship, the MV Alaed, is reportedly sitting off the coast of Scotland. The photo above may be the Mi24 helicopter. The Mi25 is the export version of the Mi24.

  • Too bad the EU doesn’t have the extra-police rights to confiscate the cargo.

    • Jim, and too bad we have made so many major mistakes in handling Assad and others like him. Too bad we continue to fund dictators around the world.
