Afghanistan: Killings by Group of American Soldiers Drunk Laughing – Not a Single Soldier?

While this story is believed to involve one U.S. soldier killing 16 and wounding 5, Reuters is reporting eye-witness accounts of a group of drunk and laughing American soldiers entering the village, killing and then burning the bodies, complete with a photo of two Afghans looking at burned spot on the floor of a house. See those quotes below. Beyond that, the story is this: a U.S. Army soldier left his base today, fully armed in the early morning hours, walked one mile to a village, reportedly went house-to-house and allegedly gunned-down civilians, including 3 women and 9 children. Five others are wounded. Sticking to the story of one unnamed U.S. soldier responsible, he is said to be a Staff Sergeant in U.S. ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) custody in Kandahar, after returning to his base and turning himself in. Afghan President Hamid Karzai, said this “cannot be forgiven,” (but apparently not the deaths of six Americans TARGETED, now dead, after the Koran burnings) and “cannot be forgiven.”

Here are the quotes about a group of soldiers shooting up the village:

“They (Americans) poured chemicals over their dead bodies and burned them,” a weeping Mr Samad told Reuters at the scene…

Neighbours said they awoke to crackling gunfire from American soldiers, whom they described as laughing and drunk.

“They were all drunk and shooting all over the place,” said neighbour Agha Lala, who visited one of the homes where the incident took place. “Their bodies were riddled with bullets.”

An AP photographer saw 15 bodies between the two villages caught up in the shooting. Some of the bodies had been burned, while others were covered with blankets.

A young boy partially wrapped in a blanket was in the back of a minibus, dried blood crusted on his face and pooled in his ear. His loose-fitting brown pants were partly burned, revealing a leg charred by fire.

If these “eye-witness” accounts are not true, and it seems that are not, it is atrocious they were published. American officials are expecting increased violence against our Military, in the wake of the Koran burnings. Just one more excuse for Afghan riots. We are apologizing, more expected. These men and women serving in this uncivilized nation need all the prayers we can wing upward.
UPDATE 1:37 pm CDT: Prof. Douglas at American Power has an article up on the numbers of Americans wanting the U.S. out of Afghanistan. He believes our current strategy is the right one and no matter the cost, we must keep the Taliban and al-Qaeda out of Afghanistan. I can agree with that, ONLY IF, we are brutal in doing so. Had we put foot in Afghanistan and declared there would be no Taliban or al-Qaeda in the area, and meant it, and been willing to destroy lives and villages to meet the goal, I think we would have won. Afghans had already lost their husbands, wives, sons and daughters to the Taliban for many long years before we entered the fray after 9-11-01.
We will not change the minds of the Taliban, and not even the minds of the average Muslim man, or the Taliban man who leaves and returns home. We can only buy a Muslim man’s attention until the Taliban offers him more…more for his crop, more for his daughter, more for his wife. Just my opinion.
Eleven years too late, I believe we will NEVER change a country with allegiance to the Koran. It’s an ancient mindset and it has never been done at any time in our history. When they attack us, we should hit back unmercifully and come home.
