  • I liked Aerosmith since I was 13, but this is pretty bad, man

    I dunno…

    • I love it!

      • Okay, now I can finish my comment. I had to run and turn the chicken breasts which I’m preparing on the new Calphalon grill Santa gave me for being an exceptionally good girl.

I did like Tyler’s version. I loved that it was the traditional version, and I didn’t mind the Tyler scream at the end. He looked like he felt every word he sang.

Now for a superior Star Spangled Banner, I pick my hometown songstress, Kristen Chenoweth who just belted it out at the Giants and 49-ers game.

  • I like that Tyler showed respect for the song by doing it as properly as he could. It takes guts to sing that song in public. Unforgiving demands in several octaves. A capella. He did a fine job.

  • I agree with Opus; it takes a LOT of courage to sing our national anthem. And I love Stephen. I wasn’t a fan of Aerosmith, wasn’t a non-fan, just wasn’t much aware of them. But watching him on Idol I have come to love him. He especially won my heart last year or year before, can’t remember which, when the man trying out had a fiance who had been in a horrible car wreck and had suffered some brain damage. The young man trying out had stayed with her and she was there with him. The judges asked him to bring her out, and the way Stephen interacted with her was heart-warming.

Thanks for this Maggie, I missed the beginning of the game and didn’t see it.

  • If I didn’t hear it myself I wouldn’t have believed it. But he hit all the notes clearly and wonderfully.

  • I think it was great. I don’t like it when they pile up those heavy vibratos. Not my cup of tea. Taylor had none of that.

  • Someone commenting on the Youtube video said it best..

“No one can pull off the National Anthem…maybe 1 or 2 singers. But definetly not written for today’s singers. That said, steven tyler sung it Aerosmith style, and i liked it. Keep in mind it was freakn cold and that makes it really hard for the best of best to even sing. Aerosmith ROCKS!!!!”

The National Anthem is never a easy task. Few can really pull it off well.

Tyler sounded and looked like a malnourished, echo chamber for the Roseanne Barr rendition. It was like listening to fingers nails dragged across a chaulk board, never mind blowing the words.
    Geez!

[And I’m a Aerosmith fan] stick to Rock Anthems!

  • It would have been alright if he didn’t scream out the “free”. What disgusts me more is the disrespect shown by many of the NFL players who couldn’t muster enough respect to put their hand over their heart or continually talked through the anthem. You would think that after one of their own, Tillman, gave his life in defense of this great nation, they could at least show respect.

    • BobF, hubby and I were also appalled at those just standing there, their hands at their sides or worse. The first scream was to reach the high note. The last was pure Tyler, but everything else was traditional. I could tell he was emotional and understood what he was singing. I admire him because he has overcome many long years of drugs and is now helping others to do the same. Short story, I think he’s a hoot. He’s perfect on American idol.

Oh, dear. I have never, ever, been able to understand why people who cannot sing can become such big stars. And my children were never able to explain it to me. What is the fascination to listen to people scream and sing “between” the notes? For some reason, they seem to think that it’s great that ANYONE can become a star, even if they have NO singing voice at all! Really, my grandpa could sing just like Willy Nelson, but he would never foist that on anyone else! He only sang when he wanted to make everyone laugh!

And to those of you who said the National Anthem is difficult – you are correct. However, I, with an untrained, but God-given fairly nice voice, could make it sound sooo much nicer than that!

  • Heya i’m for the first time here. I came across this board and I in finding It truly useful & it helped me out much. I am hoping to offer something again and aid others like you aided me.
