This is startling news in light of all the details that have come out in the Jerry Sandusky rape case. At this late date, an email has surfaced, with McQueary writing that he did “have discussions with police and with the official at the university in charge of police.” McQueary was a graduate assistant for Joe Paterno at the time he allegedly saw Sandusky in the shower having anal sex with a young boy on Penn State grounds.
In the email obtained by the Allentown (Pa.) Morning Call, McQueary wrote that he “did have discussions with police and with the official at the university in charge of police” following the alleged incident between Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant coach, and a boy. McQueary also wrote that he “is getting hammered for handling this the right way or what I thought at the time was right.”
UPDATE 11:47 am CDT: The Morning Call:
Mike McQueary, the Penn State assistant football coach under fire for his reported lack of action in an alleged 2002 rape of a boy by Jerry Sandusky, said in an email to a former classmate that he stopped the assault in an athletic facility shower and discussed it with police…
Asked about McQueary’s statement in the email that he had discussions with police, Penn State police told The Morning Call they were deferring to the university public relations office, which did not return a call Tuesday afternoon. Pennsylvania State Police in Harrisburg, who are heading the investigation, did not return a call.
The information available when this story first broke was that McQueary saw the rape happening, called his father, went to his father’s house, went back to the university and told Joe Paterno. There was also a story I haven’t seen repeated that McQueary met individually with Curley and Schultz and told them what he had seen.
In the aftermath, McQueary has lost his coaching postion and is hiding in an undisclosed place in fear for his life. Note in the quote above, he does not say that he told Joe Paterno. Read more here.
