Michelle’s Daughters Listed as Senior Staff for Africa Flights: $427,000 for Airfare Alone

The entire trip to Africa for Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha cost taxpayers $427,000 for airfare alone, $500,000 for the entire trip. Along for the fun was Michelle’s mother, a niece and nephew, among others. Malia and Sasha were listed on the manifest as “senior staff,” essential for an African safari.

Washington Examiner:

Obama Senior Staff: Malia and Sasha Obama

Judicial Watch said the U.S. Air Force provided a C-32 – a Boeing 757 modified by the military for the purpose of flying big-wigs around the world – to fly the First Lady and her entourage to and from Africa, at a cost of $424,142. Another $928.44 was listed as the cost of providing 192 meals for the 21 people who made the trip

The Obama daughters were listed on the manifest as “senior staff.”

  • I think the whole trip should be repaid to the taxpayer. If granted a second term I think Obama will revise the idea of paying the First Lady.

  • No expense too great for fostering prodigies.

“Because the Only Good Progressive is a Failed Progressive”

  • Maggie,
Is that $427 million, or $427 thousand? Your headline is at odds with the story blurb – or am I misunderstanding something?

Either way, it’s too much money, and I can’t see how the kids are senior anything, let alone senior staff.

    • Steven, thank you. It was thousand. We talk about “thousands” so seldom today. Everything seems to be at least millions. I really appreciate the heads us and I have corrected!

  • I thought you were sneaking a pop math quiz into your blog. Diabolical.

  • Fraud waste and abuse.

  • From my morning links today:
$432,142: The cost of Michelle’s family safari trip to taxpayers…and that’s just the plane, Secret Service detail and in-flight meals. Lodging is not included, but we know she stayed at least most of her trip at the Table Bay Hotel. The priciest rooms they offer (Superior Suites) go for 35,870.40 Rands, which when converted to dollars is $4,415,63 a night per room. She had 16 traveling with her, giving her the benefit of the doubt that she put the rest in regular rooms at $3,579.13 a night and they stayed for 7 nights. That give us $375,808.65 for guest rooms and $30,909.41 for her and Sasha’s suite for a total of $406, 718.06. Now add that to the $432,142 and we have a grand total of $838,860.06. I’m sure they probably got some souvenirs too.

Stop by and check the hyperlinks in the text.

  • If they were listed as senior staff, I wonder if they got paid as senior staff?

  • What a BIG FAT waste of taxpayers money. We The People resent this whole Obama administration and how they just SPEND SPEND SPEND then expect all of us to cut back our expenses to pay MORE MORE MORE taxes. To hell with them including the dog that rides in a separate plane.

  • I believe they’re senior advisers, explains the infantile decision making

  • Ed

Laura Bush took 5 trips to Africa during GWB’s 8 years in office, all them using US Gov transportation. One of them included a family safari. The press and Judicial Watch was indifferent. It wasn’t front page news. It was hardly news at all.

“…$928.44 was listed as the cost of providing 192 meals…” That breaks down to about what the AF would cost out for an air crew’s inflight meals, IIRC. Those used to consist of a sandwich, piece of fruit, half pint of milk, chips and a cookie. You think that’s what the first family dined on?

And they called Nixon’s reign Imperial!

  • Wasting money and being abused! They spent much money for just one trip. Also, it’s funny about listed as “senior staff”

  • It’s truly a great and helpful piece of information. I’m satisfied that you shared this useful info with us. Please keep us up to date like this. Thanks for sharing.
