I said yesterday, I couldn’t wait to see the fall-out from Stacy McCain’s report yesterday that a Rubio staffer was behind Florida moving its primary to January 2012. The purpose: to take early advantage of Mitt Romney’s polling and solidify the GOP candidacy for him. Byproduct: maybe a Veep nomination for Romney. My original discussion here.
So today, Javier Manjarres at the Shark Tank spoke to Rubio directly, who is quoted saying:
“Don’t you think if something like that had happened, you would have heard something? 100% fiction, they just made it up out of thin air…” – Senator Marco Rubio
Meaning McCain or his sources “made it up out of thin air.”
A couple of points and then you must read what Stacy has to say about this because…”When a politician publicly accuses me of making up a story “out of thin air,” additional reporting is required.”
1) No one inside the Rubio campaign would admit to this, true or not.
2) Rubio has advocated for an early primaries in Florida since 2007, and indeed, the 2008 primary was moved to January 29th from the usual March date.
3) Rubio aide Cesar Conda and approximately 5 others who worked for Rubio when he served in the Florida Senate, also worked for Mitt Romney’s 2008 campaign.
Florida faces the loss of half of its Republican delegates if the GOP decides to punish them. Read a good explanation of the value of an early primary here.
Please run over and read The Other McCain’s response here. Stacy talks about his own sources in depth. Read his original report here. Stacy also writes for The American Spectator. Rubio sent an email to The American Spectator about McCain’s article. Read it here.
