CBS News is reporting that Attorney General Eric Holder was sent “frequent” briefings on Operation Fast and Furious beginning in July 2010, which CBS says “directly contradicts” Holder’s statement to Congress. claiming he knew nothing until April 2011. Find all of my Fast and Furious reports at the tab under my banner above. See a video report below.
Yet internal Justice Department documents show that at least ten months before that hearing, Holder began receiving frequent memos discussing Fast and Furious.
The documents came from the head of the National Drug Intelligence Center and Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer…
Ever since, the Justice Department has publicly tried to distance itself. But the new documents leave no doubt that high level Justice officials knew guns were being “walked.”…
Here’s how CBS reports the spin:
The Justice Department told CBS News that the officials in those emails [read them in the CBS link above] were talking about a different case started before Eric Holder became Attorney General. And tonight they tell CBS News, Holder misunderstood that question from the committee – he did know about Fast and Furious – just not the details.
A brief explanation of Fast and Furious: The BATFE, believed to be working with The Department of Justice, instructed gun sellers to sell high-powered weapons to “straw” buyers, knowing the guns would be “walked” over the border into Mexico. Supposedly, the reason for doing so was to trace weapon serial numbers back to drug cartels in Mexico. Many believe the operation was designed to bring about tighter gun laws in this country, and had little to do with the cartels. After American Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was murdered with one of the “walked” weapons, the investigation began in the U.S. House and Senate.
Barack Obama recently said some information redacted from papers sent to Congress had “significant confidentiality interest.” We can see that, can’t we? Hyscience has some thoughts – Holder’s lying. Read it here.
