Cain Gingrich Debate Nov. 5: Texas Tea Party Patriots Sponsor Gingrich Cain Debate

Texas Tea Party Patriots are sponsoring a debate between presidential hopefuls Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich on November 5th. Now, that’s what I’m talkin’ about. Congressman Steve King (R-IA) will be one of the moderators. Here’s how Newt described the offer from the Texas Tea Party Patriots:

“The tea parties in the Houston area called us and said – I think in Woodlands – said they’d love to get Herman [Cain] and me to talk in a dialogue, not a debate,” Gingrich said. “And they wanted to use Paul Ryan’s plan on Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security as a base. Then have us discuss each of us, our thoughts about it, how we’d do it, what we’d approach. So it should be very creative and very positive, I think. And Herman [Cain] and I – we were talking the other night at the Des Moines [Faith and Freedom Coalition] event that we’re both looking forward to it because we think it’ll be different.” Source: CNN

This will be the first time we’ve heard Newt in-depth as the media coverage has focused on Romney, Perry and Cain. Have to hope I get to see it. So far, no network or cable has put it on their schedule.

NRO quotes Texas Tea Party spokesman Bill O’Sullivan saying, Cain and Gingrich have been the two most interesting debaters among the field. I agree with that. RebelPundit thinks this pairing and debate style is a good idea. RedState doesn’t. Weasel Zippers has some interesting comments. UPDATE: The Last Refuge loves the idea.

I’d like to see Bachmann paired with either Gingrich or Cain in a debate, but she is just a woman. Sheesh! No one can take her seriously. I’m still looking for my candidate. How about you?

    • Hi Bill, thanks for coming by. I’m puzzled at those deriding this format. In fact, I’m linking every blog I find that is excited by it. I hope this will spur similar events. I’m hoping this will be televised, or at least live-streamed. Good work! This is exactly what Tea Parties do so well.

  • Personally, I think it’s a good idea. Of course some people won’t like the format, but that probably has to do with the fact that the Republican establishment isn’t getting their way.

    As for choosing my candidate, I announced my choice this morning. I will be supporting Ron Paul.

    • LD, you are right about the establishment. Newt and Cain are not their choice. I just read your Paul endorsement and commented at your place. I will enthusiastically support whomever our candidate is, and can feel fairly good about all of them but one, Romney, but I will try to erase my Romney knowledge base if he is the candidate and work hard for his election.

      After that, we have to hold feet to the fire.

  • I’m still backing “anyone but Obama.” I like this debate idea. As much as I like Cain, I don’t think he’ll be a match for Gingrich who is way smarter than people give him credit for being. Ok – that was a weird sentence – it’s early and I know you can sort through what I’m trying to say.

    The debate should be Obama vs. Cain.
    Obama vs. Newt.

  • This is great! Though I’d like to see Bachmann included as well, if she was, then I’d want Paul included, etc. etc…and we’d end up right where we started. Hopefully this could be start of several different one-on-one candidate match-ups…almost like Firing Line for candidates. If only we still had WFB around to moderate.

  • This is a great idea. Maybe other Tea Parties will consider doing something similar with different combinations of candidates.

    As a Tea Partier, I think this is a great idea..however, in order for the most people to see it..one of two things have to happen..less expensive admission or televised..I personally think there is no candidate that can hold a candle to Gingrichs knowledge and insight and I believe more people to to be exposed to that fact.     I can’t wait for this! I hope it gets televised or broadcast on the radio. I have never seen a Lincoln-Douglas style debate in my life but it sounds very informative. I think it will also give the spectator some idea of who the candidate really. It sounds like an intellectual “cage match”. Are they really 3 hours long? I would best describe my views as Christian/fiscally conservative/Libertarian. I would like to see Gary Johnson challenge some of the front-runners or even President Obama to a L-D style debate.

    I’m excited for this event. I hope I can get to watch it…or listen. I have been longing for our candidates to engage in an L-D style debate for the past few elections. The American people deserve the opportunity to witness the bare character and philosophy of our leaders so that we can be unified behind the Presidency even if we disagree with the decision. It builds trust and confidence in our leaders that is sorely lacking.
