NPR Alters Obama Jobs Speech?

This is odd. I posted the transcript of Obama’s jobs speech soon after it was thankfully over. The transcript I copied was from Fox News. This morning Fox is linking to an American thinker piece saying that NPR removed the words “Founder of the Republican Party” (referring to President Abraham Lincoln) from their transcript of the speech. The New York Times printed the transcript with those words in it, but the NPR transcript shows them removed. Fox did not use the words “Founder of the Republican Party” in their transcript. I don’t remember hearing them in the speech, but I was likely in the middle of weary yawn at the time.

American Thinker, Timothy Birdnow:

At one point Mr. Obama made a major gaffe; he identified Abraham Lincoln as the founder of the Republican Party.

Lincoln did not join the Republicans until 1856, over two years after the party was founded. The first Republican convention was held in Ripon, Wisconsin in 1854.
Such a gaffe would have brought huge amounts of ridicule and derision on George W. Bush, but in the case of Obama the media yawned.

Lesson learned: when the government funds a news source, you can’t count on getting the real, true and accurate news. Defund NPR now.

  • Yes, he did say that. I heard it with my own two big ears.

  • Let’s have a bit more respect for TOTUS, which would never have made a mistake like that.

PBS is presenting Obama’s remarks *as prepared*, although they have an erroneous ALL CAPS description of “TRANSCRIPT”.

The White House site, and most other transcripts I have seen, are *as delivered*. Obama was ad-libbing when he volunteered the history lesson.

For example, this is a different passage from the White House site:

“(Applause.) It will provide — it will provide a tax break for companies who hire new workers, and it will cut payroll taxes in half for every working American and every small business. (Applause.)

    And PBS:

“It will provide a tax break for companies who hire new workers, and it will cut payroll taxes in half for every working American and every small business.”

Needless to say, the prepared version included neither “applause” nor a repetition of “it will provide”.

    • Tom Maguire, good information. I guess it was the TOTUS not respecting what the President chose to do. He always gets in trouble when he decides to roam on his own. The man knows naught and republicanism.

  • Don’t know about the transcript, but the President certainly said it. I heard him also.

  • Carl and LD, thanks for the confirmation. I guess I was indeed in the middle of a big yawn, or a game of computer Free Cell.

  • Welcome to Orwell’s 1984.

Since this story broke, PBS has gone back to BHO’s version of that portion. Ot so I’ve read today.
