Second Lieutenant Joe Cunningham, 27, died in a non-combat-related incident on Saturday, August 13th in Laghman Province, Afghanistan. He served with the 1st Batallion, 179th Infantry Regiment, a part of the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. If new information becomes available, I’ll add it here.
Second Lieutenant Cunning enlisted just two months after September 11, 2001 and had previously served in Iraq 2005-2006. Cunningham is was the 5th member of the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and the 7th Oklahoma soldier to die in Afghanistan since July 29th. Today we learned of the death of Pvt. 1st Class Josh Seals.
Units from the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team deployed to Afghanistan and Kuwait earlier this year. During the deployment, the brigade conducts full-spectrum operations, meaning it handles all military operations in a given region. Its tasks include counter-insurgency operations and construction projects. Members of the brigade also act as advisers to the Afghan military and federal police force. The brigade includes the Stillwater[Oklahoma]-based First Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment.
God bless the family and friends of Lt. Cunningham.
