Joe Biden stood at a mic in China and declared he “fully understood” the country’s “one child policy.” That would be the policy where families can be forced to abort any child after the first, or forced to abort the first, if the first is a female. The communist government also sometimes forces sterilization. In the video below, Charles Krauthammer is appalled that an American in the Executive Branch of our government would make such a statement.
In researching this story, I found that the one-child policy is restricted to Han Chinese living in urban areas. The Han Chinese are the “native Chinese” people and the world’s largest ehtnic group. The one-child law does not affect any citizen living outside of urban areas.
The policy, now in place for a quarter of a century, is considered necessary to reduce the population growth of 1.3 Billion down to 300 million. That’s quite a reduction, and it is at the expense of girl babies:
This rule has caused a disdain for female infants; abortion, neglect, abandonment, and even infanticide have been known to occur to female infants. The result of such Draconian family planning has resulted in the disparate ratio of 114 males for every 100 females among babies from birth through children four years of age. Normally, 105 males are naturally born for every 100 females. Source
Millions of Chinese are now young adults and have no siblings. There is a provision that allows a couple, both of whom have no brothers or sisters, to have two children.
But look at this – very interesting:
Statistically, China’s total fertility rate (the number of births per woman) is 1.7, much higher than slowly-declining Germany at 1.4 but lower than the U.S. at 2.1 (2.1 births per woman is the replacement level of fertility, representing a stable population, exclusive of migration).
I believe I’m correct in saying, in the U.S. our fertility rate, which is important to maintain our culture, stays at a barely acceptable level due to Hispanics. The highest fertility rate around the world is among Muslims.
Biden did make the point that one child per family was not nearly enough to maintain, support and care for the elderly, and the demands of old age: one wage earner to care for 4 people.
