UPDATED 5-2-11: Breaking everywhere – Osama bin Laden is dead! KILLED ONE WEEK AGO BY U.S. FORCES in the early hours of May 2, 2011 Pakistan time, May 1st, May Day in the U.S. – a U.S. bomb or missile got him. It was a fire fight on the ground. The U.S. has been confirming DNA over the past week before the announcement. AP confirming that the U.S. has his body. Not sure whether it happened in Pakistan or Afghanistan, according to Fox’s Jennifer Griffin. Ongoing updates. Senior Fox Capitol Hill producer Chad Pergrem, telling Geraldo there are multiple confirmed reports that Osama bin Laden is dead. Trying to find out if Congress has been briefed. Update: Joe Biden informed Congress. Top National Security sources have been briefed by Leon Panetta.
Word just in, no virgins – not a single one available for Osama.
AP says Osama bin Laden was killed inside a mansion while living in Islamabad, Pakistan. Unconfirmed.
10:10 pm: Jennifer Griffin – Pentagon – familial DNA used to identify bin Laden. Yes, the U.S. has his body. Confirmed that he was killed in Pakistan, but she cannot confirm where in Pakistan. Officials have been ready to confirm his death on short notice, as they have had DNA ready for years. Jennifer says there are also reports that he died by gunshot at close range. Confirmed is that it did happen one week ago.
Idiot Geraldo is telling us how many of bin Laden’s homes he has been in.
10:00 p.m. Obama 1/2 hour late, as always. Still no speech.
10:20 p.m. Fox reports that a crowd is outside the White House changing “USA,” USA”
National Security is advising Western countries to be vigilant with security as the death of Osama bin Laden may spear attacks.
Brett Baier is reporting it may have been a ground attack. Again Baier says it is not believed to have been a ground attack, rather than a sky-born missile.
Senior Pakistani sources confirming that bin Laden was killed in Pakistan.
Geraldo now giving more confirmation that bin Laden was killed on the ground, and the assumption is by covert ops.
10:30 p.m. Obama is now one hour late. Who cares. We have all the news now that matters.
Fox’s Hill producer, Chad Pergrem: sources say Boehner was told about the death about 10:00 pm tonight.
10:33 p.m. Here goes Obama: US has been responsible for operation that killed Osama bin Laden. He’s remembering 9/11/01. Hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless sky, black smoke from the Pentagon, the Towers collapsed, Flight 93 going down in Pennsylvania. Yet worse, those that did not show up at the dinner table – leaving a gaping hole in our hearts. On that day, no matter or race or religion, we were united to bring these people to justice. We went to war against al-Qaeda. Thanks to military and counter-terrorism intelligence. In Afghanistan we removed the government that gave bin Laden safe haven – yet he escaped capture and went to Pakistan.
Shortly after taking office, he directed Leon Panetta to make killing bin Laden the first priority. In August he was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden hiding in a compound in Pakistan. Last week Obama directed the operation to go forth.
Now he says today he directed the operation (which means bin Laden has not been dead for a week??? – perhaps I misunderstood?) Okay, after Obama’s speech Brett Baier says Obama said he called for the attack last week, which makes sense. There was a fire fight. No Americans were injured. Update May 2, 2011: bin Laden DID DIE YESTERDAY – May 2, 2011 PAKISTAN time.
Obama is making it clear that the U.S. is not at war with Islam, that bin Laden was not a leader of Muslims. After praising our military, he asks to think back to the unity after 9/11.
I don’t think I heard the name of President G. W. Bush? Anyone? Okay, Brett Baier is reporting that George W. Bush says Obama called him earlier this evening to tell him of the successful strike.
K.T. McFarland says she was in Afghanistan just 10 days ago with General Petraeus. She believes this may be “a total game changer for Afghanistan and Pakistan.” She believes the Taliban fence-sitters will turn away their brutality with bin Laden dead, and the diehard will try to build momentum. She said this will be total confirmation of General Petraeus and his operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
