White House Thug Tactics Against Carla Marinucci and SF Chronicle?

San Francisco Chronicle editor, Ward Bushee, says the White House is lying when it said today they did not threaten to prevent a SF Chronicle pool reporter, Carla Marinucci, to cover White House events in the future. See a video below.

Ward Bushee:

Sadly, we expected the White House to respond in this manner based on our experiences yesterday. It is not a truthful response. It follows a day of off-the-record exchanges with key people in the White House communications office who told us they would remove our reporter, then threatened retaliation to Chronicle and Hearst reporters if we reported on the ban, and then recanted to say our reporter might not be removed after all.

Phil Bronstein at Bronstein at Large says he was in on some of the off-the-record the conversations with the White House, and he confirms Bushee’s statement. The White House lies again.

What’s worse: more than a few journalists familiar with this story are aware of some implied threats from the White House of additional and wider punishment if Carla’s spanking became public. Really? That’s a heavy hand usually reserved for places other than the land of the free.

You may remember a recent fundraiser with Joe Biden appearing when the lone pool reporter allowed, Scott Power, was shut in a closet and guarded until it was time for Biden to speak, a 90 minute detention, for the purpose of denying him access to the crowd.

The attempted banishment of Carla Marinucci was for covering an Obama fundraiser when a woman at one of the tables (she paid for the event) stood up to protest supposed-unAmerican treatment of WikiLeaks “bad-ass” Bradley Manning. She sang a song, in fact, and her table mates joined in. Security escorted her from the room as she exclaimed that she hoped she would not be tortured in jail. Marinucci did what any reporter would have/should have done and videoed the episode.

Obama kept his cool, and in the video below you can see him laughing, but it was not a laughing matter to the Obama campaign, as it gives his his anti-war supporters more fodder to chew on and spit out in inconvenient places…like a fundraiser. The best way to handle these things is to silence the “news.” Bronstein’s article has much more, with a serious look at the continuing media adoration that threatens all that is right and good about journalism (assuming there is any left today).
