UPDATE: The death of Chris Hondros is now confirmed. Two directors and photojournalists, Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, were hit in a mortar attack while covering the front lines in Misrata, Libya. It appears the death of Tim Hetherington is confirmed, but the status of Chris Hondros is unconfirmed. Some reports say Hondros also died, and others say he is gravely wounded with a brain injury. I’ll have updates as the story evolves.
Hetherington was a contributing photographer to Vanity Fair magazine. He co-directed the Oscar-nominated documentary Restrepo about soldiers in Afghanistan with Sebastian Junger.
Chris Hondros was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for his work in Liberia. He was a senior staff photographer for Getty Images.
“In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO.”
Prayers for Hondros and his family, as well as the family of Tim Hetherington.
