UPDATED April 12, 2011. I wrote about this earlier in my Sunday Faith News/Views post, but in general, we read a specific topic that grabs our interest. The astounding story is that Planned Parenthood (PP) performed an abortion on an average of every 95 seconds, 365 days a year in 2009. And the other important story is that we have yet to defund Planned Parenthood of their $363M in federal funds and grants. PP supporters say: 1) PP doesn’t do that many abortions, 2) it is illegal to apply federal funding to an abortion, so we taxpayers needn’t worry about our tax dollars, and 3) Planned Parenthood health services exist for low-income women exclusively. You and I might respond, 1) PP is the largest supporter of abortions in the U.S. 2) we have no way to validate that taxpayer money is not used, 3) why are low income women using Planned Parenthood when we have a Medicaid system, and 4) PP spent $1M to elect and re-elect Democrats in 2010, and routinely use their funds to fight court cases, generally against any conservative cause.
This story originated for me at The Daily Gator with an article saying that Planned Parenthood performed an abortion every 95 seconds in 2009. Before you read the following, or run-off to answer your phone, note that it will be a very good thing for you to contact your Senator as soon as possible. The Senate will be voting on defunding Planned Parenthood, and Harry Reid probably has the votes he needs to send the legislation to the Senate’s trash heap of unlegislated responsibility. Grab the phone, but please come back. FIND YOUR SENATOR’S EMAIL AND PHONE HERE.
Remember that it is illegal to for abortions to be funded with taxpayer monies.
Planned Parenthood performed 332,278 abortions in the United States in 2009, according to a fact sheet the group published last month.
That is about as many as the 333,012 people who lived in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2009, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The 332,278 abortions Planned Parenthood performed over the 365 days of 2009 equals an average of 910 lives terminated per day – or about 38 per hour, or one every 95 seconds.
Planned Parenthood, according to its most recent annual report, also received $363.2 million in government grants and contracts during its fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2009.
NOW, THIS IS WHY YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO WIKIPEDIA STATS: As I was researching PP this week, before finding the Daley Gator article, I noted that Wikipedia states less than 2% of visits involve abortions, and then says “Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of abortions in the United States.” The 820 PP locations service 5 million clients per year, but the math doesn’t match their own propaganda.
If Planned Parenthood’s own public materials state they performed 332,278 abortions in 2009 – that’s far more than 2% their business, assuming the 5 million clients is correct – which would be about 100,000 abortions. If PP claims 332,000+ abortions, it reasonable to assume the number may be much larger – but we wouldn’t know, because they continually ignore requests for a Government Accountability Office (GAO) audit. The one time they did cooperate in an audit of years 2003-2008, only $657 million was accounted for, out of $1.3 million. Note also, that the $1.3 million has apparently soared to $363 million in Obama’s proposed budget, because that is the amount Republicans were trying to defund before a government shutdown last Friday, April 8th.
If the Government Accountability Office doesn’t know how much federal money Planned Parenthood has been given, how in the world can the taxpayers know? If Planned Parenthood is not held accountable to 32 members of Congress requesting information from the GAO about its income and expenditure of federal funds, how can we taxpayers ever hope to know to what extent Planned Parenthood is fleecing us? IsPlanned Parenthood really going to be allowed to ingest almost $1 million of taxpayer money every day (according to its annual report) and not be held accountable for how it spends it, then justify its lack of accountability by saying the Government Accountability Office doesn’t know how much federal money the abortion giant received?
Daley Gator makes the point that taxpayer participation theoretically pays for about $932.00 per abortion. The bottom line is, PP is the abortion refuge for America’s women, and we are naive to believe we are not enabling and paying for them.
The organization has some 700,000 “active donors – among them Warren Buffet, the Ford Foundation, Ted Turner and Bill and Melinda Gates, and unfortunately the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure, which reportedly gave Planned Parenthood $731,000 in 2009.
I found a post by Kelleigh Nelson at GulagBound showing that Susan G. Komen contributes to Planned Parenthood in quite a generous fashion. I have been a contributor to SGK for many, many years. I’m reminded of a lesson that I know well, but obviously have not acted upon: we must verify every charity and know who it contributes to, both charitable and political. Here is part of that information. I hope you will read it in its entirety.
Between 2004 and 2009, SGK affiliates gave $3.3 million to Planned Parenthood. In Fiscal Year 2009 alone, Planned Parenthood got $731,303 from SGK…
Their website states that childbearing protects women from breast cancer, and the more children a mother bears and the younger she begins bearing them the better. They also acknowledge breast feeding protects against breast cancer. Abortion however, blocks all those preventative measures. It has even been found that breast cancer survivors lower their risk of dying by 42% simply by getting pregnant, but again, abortion blocks that protection. SGK acknowledges never having children increases a women’s risk of getting breast cancer, and delaying childbearing, particularly after 35, also increases the risk. Abortion increases the risk of both those risks….
Eric Winer [SGK Chief Scientific advisor] has also dismissed the proven link between abortion and breast cancer even though there are many studies and clinical professionals who agree, including Angela Lanfranchi, M.D., who writes in a Breast Cancer Prevention Institute brochure, (link) “The later in pregnancy an abortion is done, the higher the risk of breast cancer as the more Type 1 and 2 lobules will have formed. Induced abortion leaves a woman with more places for breast cancer to start.
Karen Malec, spokesperson for the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer says Komen does not tell women the truth that abortion increases breast cancer risk in three ways:
- By delaying a first full term pregnancy (a risk recognized by all experts) the woman loses her chance to mature 85% of her cancer-susceptible breast lobules into full cancer resistant lobules at a younger age. Full maturity takes place throughout the last months of pregnancy.
- Almost all of the childless women’s breast lobules are cancer–susceptible Type 1 and 2 lobules. Up to 95% of all breast cancers arise in these lobules. The breasts grow during pregnancy because of an increase of estrogen which is a cancer causing agent, thereby causing the lobules to multiply. The woman who aborts before lobule maturation is completed is left with more places in her breasts for cancers to start.
- The Institute of Medicine lists abortion as a risk factor for premature birth…and premature birth before 32 weeks gestation increases the mother’s breast cancer risk. Through the abortion-premature birth link, the woman is left with more places in her breasts for cancers to start.
The Planned Parenthood facility pictured above is a peanut next to the new mammoth facility recently opened in Houston, Texas, which serves as headquarters for 12 clinics in Texas and Louisiana. A full 78,000-square-foot structure cost $26M.
In 2010, Planned Parenthood and a California affiliate together spent more than $700,000 on federal lobbying efforts, a Center for Responsive Politics analysis of federal lobbying records finds. By comparison, all other organizations that primarily advocate for abortion rights collectively spent $247,280 on federal lobbying efforts during the same period, according to the Center’s research.
Planned Parenthood’s political influence efforts hardly stop at lobbying.
The organization’s political action committee, for example, donated more than $148,000 to federal candidates — almost all Democrats — during the 2010 election cycle. The PAC spent more than $443,000 overall.
Planned Parenthood also recorded $905,796 in independent expenditures during the 2010 cycle — money spent in support of, or in opposition to, federal political candidates, largely through advertisements. The top beneficiaries of this money were Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.).
Please call your Senator’s office this week and ask them to support the coming, straight-up-and-down-vote to defund Planned Parenthood. Progressives/Liberals will be plugging the phone lines. Please don’t give up, if you can’t get through immediately – and send an email as well.
