The words of Bob Chanin, the former National Education Association (NEA) General Council, is one of the best reminders of who we are up against between now and November 2012. In the videos Chanin show us the face of the NEA, and it has nothing to do with educating our children. The first video is a short portion of the second.
“It is not because of creative ideas, it is not because of the merit of our position, it is not because we care about children, it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power and we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of millions of dollars in dues each year because they believe we are the unions that can most effectively represent them, the unions that can protect their rights and advance their interests as education employees.” (standing ovation)
“Why are conservative and right wing bastards picking on NEA and its affiliates? It is the price we pay for success. …”
For that “success” our Math and Science students continually rank below other developed nations, but our kids know all about the Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual and Transgender (LGBT) agenda, for which the NEA is a “trainer of trainers” (provides workshops). Some 44% of first year college students cannot write at the college level. Our children know nothing of the truth of our country’s founding, or the principles the U.S. Constitution set out for liberty and freedom. Our kids cannot balance a checkbook, are taught that capitalism is evil, and there is little time to devote to basic geography.
Who would have gleaned the real quest of the unionization of America’s teachers? Who would have thought the goal was to elect Democrats, to allow a failsafe for failing teachers – providing full salary for those who betrayed our children in the most morally egregious ways, to set up extraordinarily cushy retirement funds at the expense of the taxpayer, and to fight for illegals to remain in America because every classroom student brings in the bucks to schools? Rule of Law means nothing to the NEA. We understand that it’s not because the NEA “cares about the children.” We didn’t understand it then. We DO understand it now.
I’m especially grateful because Mr. Chanin all but declares that the NEA is a power-obsessed, hyper-political union that serves not children, but adults. Of course, anyone who has followed the NEA knows that — indeed, its exactly what we should expect considering that it’s the adults who pay the dues — but it’s a shocking admission from someone so high in the association, and a reality the public all too often misses.
