You’ve heard of the Make-a-Wish program where very ill children name something they would dearly love to do, and the wonderful people at the Make-A-Wish Foundation set out to make the wish come true. Often we hear that children want to go to Disney World, or on a cruise. Six-year old Enzo Pereda, now receiving treatments for cancer, wished for an opportunity to cook with Ina Garten, the Barfoot Contessa – my favorite Cheftress. The wish was denied. The Contessa was scheduled for a book tour. Enzo said he would wait for another opportunity, although his mother encouraged to choose another wish. Enzo wasn’t having it! He waited. He asked again. He was turned down again, although there was no book tour this time. The media got on the story, and Ina has changed her mind.
The story is that Ina didn’t know about the wish request, or that it had been turned down by her staff. I can believe that. After watching Garten for years on Food TV, I cannot believe The Contessa would turn down this little boy who just wanted to cook with the exceptional Ina Garten. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.
About staffs: This week we heard that Vice President Joe Biden’s staff locked a reporter in a closet to keep him from mingling with guests at a fundraiser. The reporter was officially invited to the event in the home of Alan Ginsburg. Joe Biden said he didn’t know the man was kept in a closet. Ginsburg said he didn’t know the man was kept in his closet. The staff did it.
So apparently Ina’s staff is as insensitive as that of the Vice President of the United States. Shame on them. They should know their boss (Ina) would be very concerned about a faux pas like this.
Just an Enzo decided on a second wish to swim with dolphins, he learned that Garten would call him today and ask him to cook with her. At this time I can find no confirmation that the call was made, but I feel sure it was.
Enzo was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia three years ago. The Barefoot Contessa’s TV show has been one of his favorites to watch while lying in bed. Here are a few words about Enzo from his Mom:
His TRUE LIFE STORY is the story that can help other people too. Enzo embraces, loves, befriends and prays for his cancer to help transform it from “bad cells” to “good cells” so it can move on in peace. How many people do that? How different would the world be if we all did that with our worst enemy or the things we feared the most? It is absolutely profound….he is a warrior, with a HUGE heart. Not to mention an amazing example.
God bless Enzo Pereda and his family. May he be strong and victorious. Read Enzo’s family’s blog here.
