Elizabeth Taylor: Favorite Quotes and Pics: Richard Burton’s Letter to Elizabeth

No pun intended when I say the RIP Elizabeth Taylor has been done to death, but what else are we to do? UPDATE: See a link below to the only nude photo of Taylor known to be in existence.

Elizabeth Taylor was an astonishingly beautiful woman back in the day. With only a little bit of age she became a “Broad,” and moved into “Grand Old Broad” with ease. No matter what was going on in her life, or what unfortunate events she brought down on herself and her reputation, you never heard Elizabeth Taylor complain or whine. She was always smiling, and was photographed in old-age without vanity.

Her finest tribute, in my opinion, is that her children loved and honored her to the end. For you and I, we must remember that she was a life-long supporter of Israel.

I’ve put some of my favorite Elizabeth Taylor quotes beneath the photos, and below it all is a letter Richard Burton wrote to her.

The first quote is my favorite: “When the sun comes up, I have morals again.” Don’t we all awake each morning planning to do better, to rectify what we did yesterday, to be the best we can be today?

Elizabeth Taylor

When the sun comes up, I have morals again.

I am a very committed wife. And I should be committed too – for being married so many times.

Big girls need big diamonds.

I fell off my pink cloud with a thud.

I really don’t remember much about Cleopatra. There were a lot of other things going on.

I’ve only slept with men I’ve been married to. How many women can make that claim?

People who know me well, call me Elizabeth. I dislike Liz.

The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they’re going to have some pretty annoying virtues.

When people say, ‘She’s got everything’, I’ve got one answer – I haven’t had tomorrow.

Elizabeth Taylor's Krupp Diamond 33.19 carats

According to online sources, Elizabeth Taylor still owned the Krupp Diamond at the time of her death, and reportedly wore it every day. It was purchased by Richard Burton in 1968 for $305,000, the highest auction price for a diamond, at that time.

Richard Burton purchased what became known as The Taylor-Burton Diamond for Taylor in 1969. It was purchased from Cartier at somewhere north of  $1,050,000. When they divorced in 1979, Taylor auctioned it with the $5 million proceeds to go to the building of a hospital in Botswana.

Today Taylor’s jewelry collection is estimated to value at least $150 million.

Elizabeth Taylor, may you rest in peace.

Richard Burton on working with Elizabeth Taylor once again:

Well, I suppose I must don a breastplate once more to play opposite Miss Tits.

The story is that when Burton and Taylor began work on Ash Wednesday (1973) they officially “fell out of love.”

“It began with an excruciating, jealous row when Richard accused Elizabeth of having an affair with one of her costars, the handsome Helmut Berger, who played her young lover in the film…

Elizabeth flew to New York when filming was over. This time, Richard did not go with her. He made his way to Los Angeles and checked into the Beverly Hills Hotel, where he wrote Elizabeth a drunken heartfelt letter on June 25, 1973, marked “Very Private and Personal.”

~ Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and the Marriage of the Century.

So My Lumps,

You’re off, by God! I can barely believe it since I am so unaccustomed to anybody leaving me. But reflectively I wonder why nobody did so before. All I care about — honest to God — is that you are happy and I don’t much care who you’ll find happiness with, I mean as long as he’s a friendly bloke, and treats you nice and kind. If he doesn’t I’ll come at him with a hammer and clinker. God’s eye may be on the sparrow but my eye will always be on you.

Never forget your strange virtues. Never forget that underneath that veneer of raucous language is a remarkable and puritanical LADY. I am a smashing bore and why you’ve stuck by me so long is an indication of your loyalty. I shall miss you with passion and wild regret.

Burton went on to promise her there would be no more affairs for him, as after her, everyone would be “disinteresting.” He also said he would do some “acting” to keep him in booze and butter, and he promised to write to “her,” not about “her.” Shortly after Taylor left him, he for the first time sought help to detoxify, saying he was not an alcoholic, but merely a “drunk.” They divorced for the first time within the next year. Read more here. UPDATE: 4-2-11: This nude photo has just been released of Elizabeth at age 24. The photo has been in a private collection for many years.
