Good grief! Republican Congressman Chris Lee (R-NY-26th) sent a shirtless photo to a woman he met on Craig’s List, told her he
was a lobbyist, divorced, 39 years old and “classy.” The second term congressman is 46 and married – and only a Washington insider cna possibly think lobbyist are classy. Lee resigned from the House today and a special election will be held. Did I mention that his office says his email was hacked?
“I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents,” said Lee in a statement announcing his resignation. “I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness.”
On the morning of Friday, January 14, a single 34-year-old woman put an ad in the “Women for Men” section of Craigslist personals. “Will someone prove to me not all CL men look like toads?” she asked, inviting “financially & emotionally secure” men to reply.
That afternoon, a man named Christopher Lee replied. He used a Gmail account that Rep. Chris Lee has since confirmed to be his own. (It’s the same Gmail account that was associated with Lee’s personal Facebook account, which the Congressman deleted when we started asking questions.)
In the meantime, NY Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo will call a special election at his convenience. Once the election is announced, it must be held between 30 and 40 days of the announcement. Chris Lee and his wife reportedly have one child.
