Oprah Winfrey’s Leadership Academy for Girls has another scandal brewing, this time resulting in the death of a newly born baby on the academy grounds. A 17-year-old student gave birth at the school, then was taken to the hospital with the baby in her bag. It is not clear whether the child was born dead or alive. It’s not known if the girl was raped, but South Africa has the highest incident of rape of any country in the world. Read about condoms with teeth and see the video below (yes, there’s a video).
Just months after the school opened in 2007, a staff member was accused of physically and sexually abusing 15 students. In the house cleaning that followed, Oprah fired all of the dormitory matrons and the Head Mistress. The Head Mistress then sued Oprah for defamation of character. The suit was settled out of court.
Two years later, four students were expelled, and three suspended for “inappropriate behaviour” toward other students – said to be “sexual misconduct.”
A letter sent to one of the suspended girls’ parents is said to have read: “You have been found guilty of physical contact of a sexual nature with another pupil on campus, harassment, bullying other girls on campus and of being dishonest by not telling investigators the whole truth”.
Today, the dead baby’s body was found in a bag belonging to the 17-year-old student:
Charges have not been filed at this time and police are investigating, after which the case will be turned over to the Director for Public Prosecutions, ABC News reports. They have not said whether foul play is suspected in the child’s death.
Hospital staffers discovered the lifeless infant when the 17-year-old girl identified as the baby’s mother was brought in to be treated for excessive bleeding, the dead baby in her bag. Police believe that the girl, who remains hospitalized, gave birth at the school.
In South Africa, any woman of any age can get an abortion by simply requesting with no reasons given if she is less than 13 weeks pregnant. If she is between 13 and 20 weeks pregnant, she can get the abortion if (a) her own physical or mental health is at stake, (b) the baby will have severe mental or physical abnormalities, (c) she is pregnant because of incest, (d) she is pregnant because of rape, or (e) she is of the personal opinion that her economic or social situation is sufficient reason for the termination of pregnancy. If she is more than 20 weeks pregnant, she can get the abortion only if her or the fetus’ life is in danger or there are likely to be serious birth defects.
South Africa has the highest incident of rape of any place in the world – 200,000 child rapes annually. A girl has a 50% chance of being raped, and only 1 in 3 chance of finishing high school. A charity dealing with children of rape says 80% of the assaulted girls are under 13 years old.
At the 2010 World Cup, free “condoms with teeth” were handed out to girls:
While they won’t stop rape, the condoms (worn by women) have jagged-teeth inside to tear penises up. and can only be removed by doctors.
Women fearful of being raped can insert the Rape-Axe condom inside themselves like a diaphragm or tampon. If her worst fears come true, and a man attempts to rape her, the Rape-Axe’s inside hooks attach themselves to the penis and don’t come off, instead getting even tighter and stopping the man from being able to urinate. The only way to remove it is by seeing a doctor—which will obviously help with prosecution.
A female doctor, Sonnet Ehlers, invented the condom. Read about Rape Axe here.
