Keith Olbermann is reportedly joining Al Gore’s CurrentTV. He will be the chief news officer and host a prime time program. There are a number of rumors swirling, that he has an equity stake in CurrentTV is one.
The low-rated five-year-old channel needs the help. Targeting young people, it originally subsisted on YouTube-style submissions and video journalists. More recently it started producing and acquiring traditional television series, like repeats of “This American Life.”
Mr. Olbermann departed MSNBC in January after some stormy interactions with management, including a suspension for contributing to political candidates. The settlement of his contract precluded his joining another television outlet for an undetermined period of time, but an announcement of a future assignment on Current TV would presumably not violate the terms of that deal as long as he did not start until after the agreed-upon waiting period.
CurrentTV features video, one of which demonstrates how to cross from Mexico into the U.S. There are two shots of racks of dead Mexicans who died in their effort to get here. Where did this come from? A whole multi-tier rack of dead people? Then there’s a skeleton, perfectly formed just lying in the desert with his/her outstretched arm. The skeleton has been there a long time, but apparently coyotes (the four-legged kind) weren’t interested. The narrator says the experience was “humbling” and he is so glad to have had the opportunity to enter illegally from Mexico. Sick, I tell ya. Sick. Try a little Rule of Law and no one dies. Come in legally and no one dies.
Sounds like a perfect pairing: two righteous windbags without an ounce of credibility.
