Sunni Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is the world’s longest living ruler, governing with some Shariah law, with all basic Koranic values. He has a lot at stake as rioting
protesters have taken to the streets and smashed a concrete statue of Gaddafi’s “Little Green Book,” containing some of his infamous “sayings.” The government unleashed a rain of gunfire on the people today. Hospitals are begging for blood to treat the wounded. There are rumors of government guards being lynched, yet Gaddafi claims his people are uniting with his government, and the protesters are “traitors of the West.”
Women and children leapt from bridges to their deaths as they tried to escape a ruthless crackdown by Libyan forces loyal to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.
Snipers shot protesters, artillery and helicopter gunships were used against crowds of demonstrators, and thugs armed with hammers and swords attacked families in their homes as the Libyan regime sought to crush the uprising.
Family and friends of protesters killed yesterday came under a hail of bullets today as they tried to mourn their loved ones. Fifteen mourners died and “many more” are wounded.
A hospital official said one of those who died was apparently struck on the head by an anti-aircraft missile, and many had been shot in the head and chest.
The protesters say Gaddafi has had to import his thugs, and referred to them as “African mercenaries:”
Demonstrators claimed the regime had unleashed French-speaking African mercenaries against them, recruited from nearby countries such as Chad to help prop up the regime. Shaky videos filmed secretly from inside buildings and posted on YouTube showed the soldiers on the streets of Benghazi. Several were reportedly caught by the crowd and lynched….
Tanks are on the streets, and there are running battles between armed killers and protesters. Some of the soldiers have been so disgusted by what is going on that they have swapped sides.”
Libyans are not allowed to have weapons. They are completely vulnerable to their government. This what happens when a people cannot arm themselves:
“A lot of the thugs he’s employing are not Arabic speakers. They’re armed to the teeth and only use live ammunition. They don’t ask questions – they just shoot. Buildings and cars have been set on fire here, and the situation is getting worse. The dead and injured are everywhere.
“The mercenaries shoot from helicopters and from the top of roofs. They don’t care who they kill.”
Facebook has been blocked, along with the Al-Jazeera website. Foreign journalists have been denied entry into Libya. The U.S. Foreign Secretary, William Hague, says “this is clearly unacceptable ad horrifying.
More than 200 people are reportedly dead, with 900 injured. In the first video below an English-speaker describes just how dire the situation is in her area.
