Rock Star Muqtada al-Sadr Wows Crowd, Returns to Iran

Earlier this month Iraqi imam, Muqtada al-Sadr returned to Iraq from exile in Iran. A vocal critic of the U.S., Mookie returned to agitate some more, and then left about two weeks later, bound for Iran. The AP trumpeted a Mookie speech before a crowd of about 20,000, headlining with Anti-U.S. cleric wows crowd. See the adoring crowd in the video below.

Muqtada al-Sadr has repeatedly called for Iraqi aggression against U.S. and coalition forces. Fearing for his life, he fled to Iran about 4 years ago. On January 5th, he reappeared to what the Associated Press called a “rapturous crowd” in Najaf, Iraq, calling Israel, the U.K. and the U.S. “common enemies,” against Iraq.  Anti-U.S. Cleric Wows Crowd:

“We are still resisters, and we are still resisting the occupier militarily and culturally and by all the means of resistance. Repeat after me: No, no for the occupier. Let’s have all the world hear that Iraqi people reject the occupier,” he shouted. The crowd thundered along with him, pumping their fists in the air…

Today, Voice of America says the Shite cleric has returned to Iran to complete his studies. Analyst Houchang Hassanyari, a teacher at Canada’s Royal Military College, says the official position is that al-Sadr was targeted by the U.S. for assassination.

Hassanyari notes that there has been talk of Sadr eventually taking the place of Iraq’s venerable Shi’ite cleric Ayatollah Ali Sistani. For that to happen, however, he stresses, Sadr must become a “marjah” or religious authority first. Being a marjah is one step beyond being an ayatollah.

  • Things will get interesting…

  • Great picture. Look into his eyes … doesn’t he have the same look as Obama? I think Obama also said something like … “Repeat after me: No, no for the occupier.”
