Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) is fighting Democrats in a meaningful way…like hitting where it hurts. BigGovernment says Boehner has issued a “bold challenge” to Obama on Education…and specifically education in Washington, D.C.
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), a strong supporter of school choice, is hitting back hard with new legislation this week to reauthorize the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program, a school voucher program that the Obama administration has left on its last leg.
Boehner will also send a not-so-subtle message to Obama during his State of the Union address. He has invited parents, students and teachers who have benefited from school choice to sit in his box in the House chamber. They include three children who are D.C. Opportunity Scholarship recipients, D.C. Parents for School Choice founder Virginia Walden Ford and Cardinal Donald Wuerl, who oversees many of the private schools students attend…
“If the president is sincere about working together on education reform, we should start by saving this successful, bipartisan program that has helped so many underprivileged children get a quality education,” Boehner said.
The D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program was signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2004. “More than 3000 children have received scholarships to attend 66 private schools since D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program was implemented. D.C. parents played an important role in this effort to bring about change in education in the District and continue to be advocates for their children. Barack Obama ended that program in Spring 2009.
We might wonder why Obama would deny D.C. children a long standing scholarship to attend his own daughters’ school. He did just that in is first few months of office. It might have something to do with Black leaders like Sharpton and Jessie Jackson, and probably the entire Congressional Black Caucus wanting ALL THE MONEY to stay in public schools – or it might have something to do with Michelle O’s close friendship with then-DC-school chancellor, Michelle Rhee, who wanted then, and wants now, no vouchers or scholarships because ALL THE MONEY must stay in public schools. Or…it might have something to do with Michelle Rhee’s fiance, Kevin Jackson, the Mayor of Sacremento – Obama’s friend and donor. I can’t imagine Jackson advocating for anything Rhee did not want. Obama and “education reform” is an oxymoron.
