David Bowie Bing Crosby: Little Drummer Boy Video

The Bing Crosby and David Bowie track of Little Drummer Boy was recorded on September 11th, 1977 for Bing Crosby’s television special, Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas. I’ve just learned that the beautiful Peace on Earth was written specifically for the special. Crosby died 33 days later on October 14th. The show aired on November 30th, 1977 on CBS.

Little Drummer Boy

Bowie said he “hated” Little Drummer Boy, so Peace on Earth was penned by Ian Fraser, Larry Grossman and Buz Kohan. The story is that the filming and recording was done with less than a hour’s rehearsal.

  • Maggie,,I remember this and love the version. Thanks!

    • Christopher, I didn’t know about this until recently, but really like it.

  • I liked that one as well.

  • I think I posted this video last year or the year before. Funny that something from when I was a kid is now a classic.

  • Thanks for the memories!

(and the thanks is not from Bob Hope for I was around not only for that recording but the original Drummer Boy song – 1957 version)

  • Although I was a fan of Bing Crosby and hardly knew David Bowie (I was into country music during Bowie’s climb to fame) together they don’t improve the earlier version http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3870754978939699254# …I still liked the duet.

  • Thank you Maggie. It was lovely.

    Thanks for the memories….
I thought that if you’ve not heard “I’ll Be Brave This Christmas” by Big Daddy Weave, please listen to this, it will bring tears to your eyes….AWESOME tribute indeed.

GOD Bless America & Our Troops…silence is NOT an option!

    • Christie, thank you for the link. I have it up and will listen first thing in the morning.
