San Francisco employers are mandated to provide health care for employees. As a result, some restaurant owners are adding a charge to each bill, on a separate line, so that diners know exactly what they are paying for. It’s like the “resort” charge at some hotels, or the airline fuel surcharge.
The writer of this article doesn’t like the practice. He says adding an identified fee is “self-righteous,” and the fee is no different than paying rent. Well, no. There’s a big difference. A restaurant owner has to pay rent, but without the mandate, he/she doesn’t have to provide insurance for employees.
